This is Thanksgiving Day! There is one day a year when all Americans stay home with their families and give thanks. It is the time of turkey and pumpkin pie. A time for Indian corn, holiday parades and giant balloons. This is Thanksgiving Day!

The History of the Holiday The story started in 1620. A group of people (the Pilgrims as they were called) left Plymouth, a small town in England. They sailed to America to be free to practise their religion. And they wanted a new better life in “The New World”.

Their ship was called “the Mayflower”. It took them about two months to cross the Atlantic Ocean. On the 9th November they landed at Plymouth Rock (now it is the state of Massachusetts). The trip was very difficult. Some people didn’t live to see the American land.

There were people living in America before the Pilgrims arrived. These people were the Native American Indians.

They hunted, fished and farmed to survive. There were many groups, or tribes, and each had its own customs and beliefs.

The Pilgrims’ first winter in America was very hard The Pilgrims’ first winter in America was very hard. Many travellers died. The Indians helped the Pilgrims. They taught them how to hunt, fish, plant, and survive in America

The crops did well, and in the fall of 1621 The Pilgrims had a great harvest. They were thankful and decided to celebrate with a Thanksgiving feast.

The Pilgrims invited their Indian friends to share this feast. They prepared a dinner of turkey, corn, and pumpkins.

The Pilgrims built the town Plymouth. And they thanked God for their new home in America. Americans still celebrate Thanksgiving Day in autumn. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.
