Chapter 1 The City of Ember started after a very big war. The world was destroyed. There were no buildings. There were no schools. A few people lived and they started a new city. These people were very old. They called the city Ember. The world was very dark. The city of Ember had a lot of light.

Chapter 2 The new city of Ember is built. Because a lot of the world was destroyed after the world, the builders know that they may run out of supplies like food, water, and buildings. They leave directions on how to leave the city in a box. They give the box with the directions to the Mayor

Chapter 3 The year is 241 and Doon and Lina are graduating and they are friends. They are getting their work assignments. They must pick a piece of paper from a hat to find out the job they will have. Lina works as a messenger lab and Doon works in the pipeworks with water in a tunnel under ground.

Chapter 4 The box with the directions to escape Ember is lost! Doon tries to find a way to escape because supplies like food and water will run out. He goes into the pipeworks to try and find a way out. He finds a big machine, but does not know how to use it.

Chapter 5 Lina is a messenger who delivers letters all over the city of Ember. She learns about how to get around the city when she delivers. She delivers a letter to the Mayor, and a strange man named Looper.

Chapter 6 Lina goes home from working as a messenger. She has to take care of her old grandmother and her baby sister, Poppy. Poppy finds a piece of paper in a box. But Poppy chews some of the paper and tears it into little pieces. Lina saves the paper to see if she can find out what it says!

Chapter 7 Lina asks Doon to help her put together the pieces of torn paper. They put them together and find out that the message is the directions to escape the City of Ember! They must go into the pipeworks to get out of the city!

Chapter 8 When Lina and Doon are in the tunnels, they run into Looper, the strange man. They find out that Looper has been stealing the City of Ember’s supplies, like food, water, and wood! He is trying to destroy the City of Ember!

Chapter 9 Lina and Doon are going to tell the police about Looper stealing materials. The mayor finds out that Lina and Doon are trying to get Looper in trouble. Looper is the mayor’s friend. The mayor gets mad at Lina and Doon!

Chapter 10 The mayor has Lina and Doon arrested for trying to get Looper in trouble! Lina, Doon, and baby Poppy are trying to escape the city! They find an underground river and leave in a boat. They find candles, paddles, and matches on the boat!

Chapter 11 After Lina, Doon, and Poppy leave in the boat, they see land. The light on the land gives them hope. They do not have to worry about bad people any more. They are happy.
