Presentation transcript:

 The “Why” of stage lighting  Visibility- Ability to see the performers on stage. MAIN FUNCTION  Selective Focus- lighting can tell audience where to look  Modeling- lighting can make performers look a certain way  Mood-Lighting can convey mood or emotion to audience  Convey information- lighting can inform audience of time of day, season, location

 The “how” of lighting design  Distribution- Designer can control how much light is used in certain areas of stage  Intensity- Designer can control how bright or dim a light can be  Movement- A designer can control if a light moves (spotlight or laser)  Color- A designer can use color to help create mood or setting

 NEVER TOUCH THE GLASS OF A LAMP!  Screw base- common light bulb  Pre-focus base- 1 point of contact, used in Fresnel instrument, pushes in/pulls out  Bi pin base- 2 points of contact, used in ellipsoidal instrument, pushes in/pulls out  End prong base- 2 points of contact, used in spotlight/projector  Double ended- common fluorescent bulb

 Hue: The “color” something is  Ex. Red hue or blue hue  Saturation: How much Hue something has  Ex. Darker Red or Darker blue  Transmission: How much light can get through  Ex. 95% transmission=lots of light 25% trans = little light

 Lighting color wheel behaves differently BlueGreen Red Magenta Turquoise Amber White

 Fresnel  Big pool of light  Can’t change shape  Can adjust angle  Used on E1 and E2  Ellipsoidal  Different sizes of pools based on type  Can “shutter” to change shape  Can adjust angle  Used on Catwalk  Spotlight  Can adjust/focus pool of light  Can’t change shape  Can change color easily  Used on Spot deck  Strip Lights  Can’t change shape/size  Can’t change color  Red/Blue/Green  Used to light Cyc
