Section 1 Be able to describe the structure of an atom. Be able to define protons, electrons, and neutrons. Know the role of the valence electrons. Know how to read a dot diagram. Know the vocabulary words from Section 1.

Section 2 Understand how the periodic table is organized. Be able to discuss the various patterns of the periodic table. Be able to talk about how the valence electrons influence the properties of elements. Know who Mendeleev is. Know the vocabulary words in Section 2.

Section 3 Be able to describe the chemical and physical properties of metals. Be able to compare the properties of the various families of metals. Know the position of these metals on the periodic table. Know the vocabulary words in Section 3.

Section 4 Be able to locate the nonmetals and metalloids in the periodic table. Be able to compare the physical and chemical properties of nonmetals with metals. Be able to describe the properties of metalloids. Know the elements in each family of non- metals. Know the vocabulary words in Section 4.

Section 5 Know the difference between nuclear fission and nuclear fusion. Know what a supernova is. Know what plasma is.
