The IUB Libraries: the historical context
Developed for staff orientation from photographs from the University Archives, News Bureau and personal contributions from university staff.
Indiana's state government founded Indiana University in 1820 as the State Seminary, and officially changed the name to "Indiana University" in 1838.

Collection in Wylie Hall by 1891 was 9,000 volumes. There were 98 periodical subscriptions in 1887.
LIBRARY HALL 1891-
Library Hall, named after David Maxwell, first president of the IU Board of Trustees.
Space became an issue as Maxwell Hall reached capacity in Construction on the “New” Library began

LILLY LIBRARY
Special Collections began with small room in Franklin but then with gift from the Lilly Family, moved into the Lilly Library in the censuses.

The Geography & Map Library closed on December 22, Maps were moved to the Wells Library – ET2 Books & Journals were moved to either ALF or to the Geology Library. Geology Library was renamed GEOSCIENCES LIBRARY TO REFLECT COVERAGE OF GEOGRAPHY & GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES
