The North Somerset Agricultural Society Countryside Day 11 th July 2012

The reason behind the North Somerset Agricultural Society Countryside Day Lack of Countryside Education within Schools. Globalisation of the food market has led to reduction of knowledge of seasonality. Green awareness has lead to the development of the fair trade brand but this does not cover how the food is produced. Increase awareness of food miles. 170,000 primary school children within 20 miles of the showground. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable members of the rural community willing to educate the children about the importance of the countryside, the agricultural industry and country crafts.

Aims of the North Somerset Agricultural Society Countryside Day To introduce primary school children throughout Bristol and North Somerset to the realities of farming from rearing animals, growing crops and using modern machinery. To make the link between what is grown and reared on the land and what we eat. Introduce the children to the wide range of countryside activities. To introduce the children to ways of enjoying the countryside and the ways of caring for it.

Introduction to the North Somerset Countryside Day The event will take place on the 11 th July 2012 at the North Somerset Showground, Wraxall, Nr Bristol. Primary Schools from Bristol and North Somerset have been invited. The event will open at 9:15am and finish at 2:00pm. We aim to have over 2,500 school children attending. We will have four areas (zones) where the children will spend up to an hour in each. Each class will have a timetable to follow, each timetable will be unique to each class. All pupils will remain in their school classes and be looked after by their teacher and teacher’s assistants but guided by a Steward.

Educational Zones There are four education zones. Each zone will have multiple workshops. They are to be interactive and as hands on as possible. All workshops are to have an educational aspect. Schools We had over 2,200 school Children in 2011 and aim to increase this figure to 2,500 school children All schools are located within Bristol and North Somerset. (List attached)

Health and Safety All workshops will have Public Liability Insurance. All workshops will have completed a Risk Assessment. All workshops will have to satisfy the Safety Officer that their demonstration is safe. All teachers and assistants to have a pre-event briefing. The briefing will cover all aspects of Health and Safety. Emergency Response systems personnel are all CRB checked.

Budget The budget is overleaf. The North Somerset Countryside Day is a non- profit making event. All costs are estimates because of the length of time to the event, however they have been quoted by the companies identified.
