USING DATA IN IOWA TIER Sarah Brown, PhD Iowa Department of Education

Agenda and Outcomes ■Review data-use and purpose of Iowa TIER ■Review questions answered by data in Iowa TIER ■Review data available in current Iowa TIER graphs Agenda

PURPOSE OF IOWA TIER

Iowa TIER ■Iowa TIER was developed to support Iowa schools’ use of an MTSS school improvement process. ■Currently, Iowa TIER houses reading universal screening data and progress monitoring data for students in preschool through grades 6. ■It is required that K-3 reading screening data are uploaded.

Questions Not Answers ■MTSS is about asking questions to identify where resources need to be allocated. ■MTSS is about both system improvement and supporting individual students. ■The graphs used by various teams will depend on the question being asked.

Question: Is the Universal Tier Sufficient (for the learners in our building today)? Purpose: Determine if the amount of resources currently focused on improving the universal tier (Iowa Core Implementation) is sufficient.

One type of report…

Question: Which learners need additional support? Purpose: ■Determine which learners need additional support. ■This is related to progress monitoring and intervention requirements of Chapter 62.

Question: Which learners need additional support?

Question: What was the overall effectiveness of the intervention? Purpose: ■Determine the overall effectiveness of an intervention. ■It is recommended that at least 65% of learners in an intervention are successful.

Question: How effective is current instruction for the learner? Purpose: ■Determine the overall effectiveness of current instruction or intervention for an individual student.

How are subgroups performing?

Another type of report…

Question: How does our performance compare to…?

FUTURE OF IOWA TIER DATA USE

Iowa TIER Continue to build additional reports to support schools’ use of data in improving: ■Universal Tier Instruction ■Targeted Tier Instruction ■Intensive Tier Instruction Expand system to support other data components (e.g. behavior)
