GANGRENE By: Kameron Yancy & Terina

What is Gangrene Gangrene is a condition that occurs when body tissue dies. It is caused by a loss of blood supply due to an underlying illness, injury, and/or infection. Fingers, toes, and limbs are most often affected, but gangrene can also occur inside the body, damaging organs and muscles. There are different types of gangrene and all require immediate medical attention. Gangrene: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments." WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 04 Feb

CAUSES Blood plays a very important role in your health. Not only does it transport oxygen and nutrients throughout your body to feed cells, it delivers disease-fighting antibodies that protect your body from infection. When blood cannot travel freely throughout the body, your cells cannot survive, infection can develop, and tissue can die from gangrene. Gangrene: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments." WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 04 Feb

SYMPTOMS Confusion Fever Low blood pressure Gas in tissue beneath skin Severe pain Loss of feeling in area Foul smelling discharge Discoloration "What Is Gangrene?" News-Medical.net. N.p., 29 July Web. 06 Feb

TREATMENT There are not many treatments because usually once the patient finds out they have gotten this it is to late and they have to amputate. Surgery to remove dead tissues Antibiotics and other approaches "Gangrene." Treatments and Drugs. Mayo Clinic, n.d. Web. 06 Feb

EXTRA FACTS The spread of infection throughout the body (sepsis), shock, and multiple organ failure are the most serious complications associated with gangrene. Moist gangrene usually occurs in the toes, feet, or legs after a crushing injury or some other factor that causes a sudden interruption of the blood supply (both venous and arterial). An infection occurs and overwhelms the body's normal defenses, resulting in rapid tissue destruction.
