1) How many different types of governments can you name? List them and give examples of them (either current or from the past). 2) What type of government does the United States have? 3) What do you think is the difference between our government and England’s? What do you think is the difference between our government and North Korea’s?

Forms of Government Democracy Supreme political authority rest with the people. The government is conducted by the consent of the people. Can be Direct or Indirect: Direct Democracy People (citizens) meet in a central place and vote on laws directly. Also known as Pure Democracy, only found at the community level or in small societies.

Forms of Government Democracy (continued) Representative Democracy Also known as Indirect Democracy A small group of individuals chosen by the people act as their representatives to vote on laws. People voice their approval or disapproval of the representatives on periodic elections.

Forms of Government Democracy (continued) Republic Style of government without a monarchy (king, emperor, shah). Representatives have political power. Every Democracy is a Republic but not every Republic is a Democracy Constitutional Monarchy Monarchy is head of state but works within the parameters of a constitution. In other words the King or Queen has limited power. Usually shares the power with a legislative branch. For example: United Kingdom
