Populations In Transition

Population Trends and Patterns You need to be able to explain population trends and patterns in births (crude birth rate), natural increase and mortality (crude death rate, infant and child mortality rates), fertility and life expectancy in contrasting regions of the world.

Which country has the highest child mortality [probability of dying between birth and exact age 5 - expressed as deaths per 1,000 births] out of the following pairs?

Which country has the highest child mortality [probability of dying between birth and exact age 5 - expressed as deaths per 1,000 births] out of the following pairs?

Growth of World Population (1950 – 2100)

Facts 90% of future popn growth will be in Developing countries. Greatest popn growth has been (and will be) in Asia. Currently, 80% world popn lives in LEDC’s. By 2020, 16% global popn in MEDC’s (even though there will be more MEDC’s by then). Each baby born in USA today will consume 80x the resources in its lifetime of a child born in India today. 3 billion people will enter childbearing age in next generation; only 1.8 billion will leave that phase of life.

The IB Five Produce a table to display the following data for 2 of the above countries: Crude death rate. Crude birth rate. Infant mortality. Child mortality. Total fertility rate. Life expectancy.

Factors Affecting Fertility Status of women Level of education Employment opportunities Type of residence Level of available healthcare Machismo Perceived cost of having children Pressure from the government Religion
