Duties of Parenthood

2. Help children develop a sense of worth Children need to know that they are valuable and competent Children need to learn to respect themselves and others Children need to learn to be responsible
Self Concept vs. Self Esteem Self concept is your perception or image of yourself – what you think about yourself Self esteem is your sense of self worth – how you feel about yourself
3. Teach children and provide for learning Establish a peaceful atmosphere in the home Provide a safe place to play, appropriate toys and materials and a variety of experiences Encourage children to succeed on their own Praise children’s accomplishments
4. Protect children and keep them safe Protect from danger Protect from illness Protect from violence Protect from mental and emotional abuse (also physical and sexual)
5. Provide for children’s physical needs Food Clothing Shelter Rest – exercise Clean water and clean air Freedom from physical abuse Teach children to care for possessions
6. Guide and discipline children Set standards for behavior Values, fairness, justice Provide leadership Enforce rules consistently Fostering character development rules
