M EET THE T EACHER Steve first used computers 9 years ago in the Milwaukee School District where each student had a laptop. He uses computers for creating instructional materials, planning lessons, posting projects and homework (wikki), class website and communicating with students/parents/colleagues Searching the internet for ideas and resources for all subject areas has been helpful

T EACHER INTERVIEW The main rule for the computers is that the students must stay focused. Students must log in and remain seated and work on the activity Computer privilege is lost if the student wonders to a different site of does not stay on task. Pre-service teachers are a asset in providing extra help to students as well as extra eyes for discipline. The students use computers/smartboards for practice drills, spelling, problem solving, writing, drawing and power points (power points toward the end of the year) The students use internet for research projects When available they use the computer lab

O UR L ESSONS Grade: 2 Teacher: Jennifer Krueger Name of Lesson: Gumball Math Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to correctly subtract a specified number of gumballs. Content Standards: 2.0A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one and two-step word problems involving situation of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions. 2.0A.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. Materials: Smartboard, gumball machine activity from Smart Exchange Procedures: To start I will read a number story to the class and we will answer it together. Then, when asked, the students will come to the smartboard and pick which color gumball they would like. Next they will count how many of that color are in the gumball machine. I will ask them to write the number of gumballs they counted on the side so they don’t forget how many they had. Then I will ask them to leave a specified number of gumballs in the machine. Assessment: The students will take out the correct number of gumballs. Children’s Age/Grade: 7 & 8 years old, 2 nd grade Teacher’s Name : Karla Jenquin Date: 10/06/11 Name of Lesson: Gumball Math on the Smartboard Learning Outcomes: The students will solve (application) the addition math problems. The students will recall (knowledge) prior experience on how to solve an Content Standards: 2.OA.1. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. 2. OA.4. Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends. Materials: Computer, Smartboard, Gumball math game from smartboard exchange, paper and pencil Exploratory Introduction: Teacher will draw a graph on the board and ask students if they know how to fill in a graph and what can a graph tell us. Teacher will review ways to solve an addition problem; use unifix cubes, number chart on desks, neighbors, or fingers. Procedures: * Ask are there more girls or boys in the room? If I have 3 apples and buy 2 more how many do will I have? * Review the colors of the gumballs * Call a student up to the smartboard to count the color of gumballs and then fill that numbers in the graph chart. * Continue thru all colors (calling a student up per color). * Students will write down the numbers and add them all together when the chart is full. *Continue with next slide; (ex: how many red and orange gumballs all together?) call students up to write and solve on the smartboard. Assessment: The students will add all numbers together. The students will recall how they solved the answer to the teacher.
