Steps 1.Introduction 2.Rebut Opposing Contentions 3.Identify the Central Questions 4.Aff World/Neg World 5.Re-emphasize Your Contentions 6.Conclusion

Introduction “Hello, my name is _____ and I along with my partner _____ are representing Lauralton Hall to affirm/negate the resolution that ….” This is optional at this point, but make sure you clearly state what speech is being given As always, state this order I which you will be speaking – “First, I would like to provide clash with my opponent’s contentions, and time-permitting, go back and strengthen my own,” etc. STICK TO THIS ORDER!

Rebut Opposing Contentions So, at this point, your opponent has made their case for their opposing arguments, and you have rebutted their points in either one or two of your constructive speeches. If your argument against a certain contention completely negates it, it’s likely the judge has already caught on. Still, go over it quickly one more time, and make sure you clearly state: – “As a result, my opponent’s argument falls while ours stands” – Don’t spend too much time going over things that have already been proven, though!

Rebut Opposing Contentions (pt. 2) For each argument you make against your opponent, make sure you finish with some sort of concluding statement like the one on the previous slide. Go contention-by-contention, unless you are very comfortable with another method.

Identify the Central Question Single out the points that are really central to the debate. A lot of times we hear people say, “So what this debate really boils down to is a question of ______: … “ Answer the question in favor of your side.

Aff World/Neg World A common used strategy is the Aff World/Neg World strategy. In it, you build two hypothetical worlds, one in which the Aff gets its way, and one in which the Neg gets its way. It’s a very effective summary tool.

Re-emphasize Your Contentions You may not have time for this, and that’s fine. The judge already knows what your contentions are. But, if you have extra time, fill it by restating your contentions.

Conclusion Conclude with a brief summary statement. Make sure it is strong an impactful, it’s the last impression you make! Good luck!
