The 10 Steps of AVID Tutoring

Steps 1-3 Before Tutorials

Step 1 of Tutoring 1.In their academic classes you take Cornell notes on the material presented in lectures, textbook readings, videos, and handouts. 2. After class students review their notes, create questions in the column of the left, and write a summary at the bottom of the page.

Step 2 of Tutorials For homework the night before a tutorial, you identify a class in which you are struggling/getting a low grade in. Write 2 higher level questions from your class work or homework. Write these 2 questions on the Tutorial Request Form.

PREPARING FOR TUTORIALS VIDEO CLIP

Step 3 of Tutorials As you come into the room the teacher/tutor will collect the Tutorial Request Forms. If they are completed at the beginning of class you will get a stamp. Students need to bring notes, textbooks, etc to help answer their questions.

Steps 4-7 During Tutorials

Step 4 of Tutorials Teacher will place students in tutorial groups. Group members will sit in a semi-circle (horseshoe shape) to facilitate communication and collaboration among every member of the group.

Step 5 of Tutorials Students writes a high level question on the board and explains to group members his/her knowledge and understanding of the question.

Step 5 of Tutorials Group members ask questions that probe deeper into possible solutions and answers to the question. The group members primary goal is to direct the student to the correct answer. The tutors responsibility is to coach/facilitate the inquiry process among group members.

Step 6 of Tutorials Group members help the student presenter think about the answer to his/her question by asking clarifying questions that check for understanding. When the student presenter understands the answer to the question he/she then communicates to the group this understanding.

Step 10 of Tutorials Teachers/Tutors/Students collaborate to debrief the tutorial and its effectiveness. Students then take what they have learned back to their content area classes to verify their learning.
