Can you hear what is being said? Do you know what to do? Can you look after yourself? 2
Can you hear what is being said? Think of a time when you were not listened to? What did the other person do/not do? Be genuine Be honest Value what you offer 3
4 Some Pointers Be aware of your boundaries/staying to role Are you getting drawn into something? Unsure? Ask. “I am not the best person to help”
Do you know what to do? A mentee phones you at 3am. A mentee wants to see your course work from the 1 st year. You meet your mentee in a bar; after a while this seems to be turning into a serious drinking session. You meet up and s/he is clearly upset and a bit withdrawn. 5
6 Friends (and family) mentors University community and university services All relationships have boundaries, expectations and shared experiences
Can you look after yourself? On an airplane they always say put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. Who will support your mentoring? Check who you should be in touch with. Keep a balance in your life See balancing the pressures on Moodle, or other stress and well-being resources on Counselling web pages Reflect and work with awareness as you are encouraged to do on your university course. 7
