April 19 Meeting for UAS Test Site in Northwest Positive Outcomes of Meeting First engagement of companies in OR and WA about a joint proposal for a potential NW test area; large turnout (80-plus) indicates significant interest. Oregon State University is committed to leading the effort to create a NW coalition. The Dept. of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory, which has a long history of UAS projects, expressed a “strong interest” in joining a NW coalition. Alaska is also interested but unable to attend; separate call is scheduled to engage AK. Oregon contingent is committed to seek funding via Oregon Innovation grants and other sources. Political support within Oregon appears substantial, assuming engagement by industry. WA organizations showed serious interest; but engagement and recruiting needs to accelerate to meet the timelines for the FAA RFP for test sites. Draft proposal for a framework for engagement (at the end of these notes for reference) seems generally acceptable to the industry.

Next Meeting October 18, 2012 Newport, Oregon, NOAA or Bend, Oregon/Central Oregon
