How your research complements or extends the research of current faculty For teaching-intensive positions: list the courses you could teach that are currently in their catalog and ones that you could develop

Teaching Statement General Philosophy of Teaching Your Experience Lecture vs. discussion vs. problem based learning Technology Approach differ in upper vs. lower-division courses? Throw around words like: synthesis, integrate, etc Your Experience Don’t just list the courses you have taught – also discuss: Challenges and how you dealt with them Course development – did you choose the textbook, write the syllabus, exams? What courses could you teach at the school you are applying to? Target length: 2 pages

Research Statement Introduction to “the problem” that your research addresses Your past work during grad school/post-doc Did you get any press on any of your publications/results? Your current work and future plans Very detailed Plans to submit grants – what will the aims be? Methods? Target Length: 2 pages

Waiting….. Don’t take it personally You may not fit the position for reasons other than quality Departments have particular areas of research/teaching that they are interested in It doesn’t hurt to have a job talk prepared Typically you only get a few weeks notice before an interview

Preparing for the interview Practice your job talk until you can do it in your sleep Be familiar with the work of the faculty members in the department Check out the currciculum and be ready to talk about what courses you would teach Come with a list of questions
