He’s afraid to tell her how he feels. She has a boyfriend. Writes a song for her. She gives it to her boyfriend to listen to. Dexter comments on his song. Can’t afford a real rose. Buys plastic. Summons courage to tell her that he “likes” her. They walk to school holding hands. Howie learns that even close friends can’t read your mind. You need to tell them how you feel about them.

Alternate ending: student rejects the invite to the dance BUT there’s another student who sees this and ASKS that student to the dance.
