I. Sudan A. Location 1. North Africa 2. Capital ● Khartoum B. Government 1. Ruled by President Omar Hasan al- Bashir C. Darfur 1. Located in western Sudan 2. Large, dry region 3. Population includes two ethnic groups: a. Arab Africans (nomads) b. Black Africans (farmers) 4. Many people are Muslims

II. Genocide A. Background 1. Problems between farmers and nomads have existed for many years and center on two issues:  water rights and grazing rights 3. The government (controlled by Arab Africans) has historically sided with the nomads B. Spark (2003) 1. The Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), a rebel group representing the farmers, began attacking government targets 2. Sudan’s government then responded C. Atrocities 1. Sudanese military began air-strikes against villages, the army attacked, and then the Janjaweed attacked: ● villages burned and residents murdered ● women raped ● property stolen D. U.N. estimates 1. Over 300,000 deaths 2. Over 2 million have been displaced, becoming refugees living in horrible conditions Scream Bloody Murder Part 12

III. Response A. International Criminal Court (I.C.C.) 1.
