II. Genocide A. Background 1. Problems between farmers and nomads have existed for many years and center on two issues: water rights and grazing rights 3. The government (controlled by Arab Africans) has historically sided with the nomads B. Spark (2003) 1. The Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), a rebel group representing the farmers, began attacking government targets 2. Sudan’s government then responded C. Atrocities 1. Sudanese military began air-strikes against villages, the army attacked, and then the Janjaweed attacked: ● villages burned and residents murdered ● women raped ● property stolen D. U.N. estimates 1.
