Conferencing Guidelines Starts with… “Tell me how your writing is going.” The purpose to the conference is to TEACH! (not help) Teacher tries to teach the student something based on their needs. Conferences last from 2-7 minutes The goal would be to get to 6-8 students in a class period Students need to know that …they need to problem solve on their own/ –Teacher may say, “Is this something you can take car of on your own, because I really need your to do that?” Ray, Katie Wood (2001) The Writing Workshop: Working Through the Hard Parts (And They’re all Hard)

A sk a Question Purpose: Is to get a handle on what is happening and make a decision about what the student needs. What does the student need to know? What would help most at this time? Do I need to reteach? What is not likely to come up in whole class instruction?

C omplement the Writer Purpose: Is to nurture the writer and create efficacy. What is the writer doing that you want them to keep doing?

T each Purpose: Is to choose one skill, technique, or strategy and nudge the student to have-a-go. Where is the student in the writing process—rehearsal, drafting, revising, or editing? Writers do different work at different points in the process.
