EDS 198 – HANDS ON LAB Clairemont High School UCSD – CREATE RH Fleet Science Center

Overview (Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment and Teaching Excellence) Goal: Provide high school students with hands-on lab experiences Engage undergraduates in a discussion on science education Involve undergraduates in teaching science

Overview Building on Last Quarter: Labs led by undergraduates who taught small groups of 3-4 students Achievements: Students focused on process of science and inquiry learning Students started to break away from textbook answers Goals: More student involvement and input in assessment Build more undergraduate and student relationships High level labs General Daily Agenda:

Your Background 1. Name 2. Where are you from? 3. What year are you in? 4. College 5. Major 6. What made you want to take this class? 7. Do you have any experience working in education and if so, please share. 8. What do you see yourself doing as a professional in the future? 9. Tell us something interesting about yourself. (interests, special talents…)

Syllabus Grading or How to do Well in this Class: Be on time Participate in discussion Be reflective Be supportive of each other Side Note: Fun but Challenging – lots of uncertainty Weekly Schedule:

Intro to Inquiry Learning Inquiry Learning aka Project-Based Learning aka Problem-Based Learning What is it? *Not Project Oriented Learning – Building Missions Example (High School): Example (Middle School): Thoughts? How did this compare to your high school or college science education? Was school exciting for you? What made it interesting and exciting? Or what made it boring? What are the benefits and pitfalls to this style of teaching? What other styles of teaching are you interested in or would want to know more about?

Structuring Inquiry in a Classroom 5E Model or 7E Model Elicit – Find out what interests students or students make observations and ask questions Engage – Create activities based on student interest that builds on what they know Explore – Allow students to plan how to collect data and find information Explain – Students organize data (compare, classify, explain, build explanations) Elaborate – Students find a real world application for their findings Evaluate – Students determine limits and authenticity for their findings Extend – Students re-explore topic to better their understanding

Problem How do we do this in 2hrs and 20 min? Elicit Engage Explore Explain Elaborate Evaluate Extend

Problem How do we do this in 2hrs and 20 min? Elicit Engage Explore Explain Elaborate Evaluate Extend

Antibiotics Lab Engage – We use isopropyl alcohol to clean lab benches. On Pinterest, there are always pins on baking soda and vinegar for all-purpose cleaners. Do hand sanitizers really work? Does Ampicillin work? Explore – How would we test this? Explain – What did we find? Elaborate – Conclusions. _____ killed more bacteria than ___ because ____. Evaluate – We only tested on e. coli. How would this work on other bacteria. What if we took a swab of bacteria from our hands or a bunch of people’s hands? 1pm – 3:20pm

Antibiotics Lab Extend - Students and undergrads reflect on the lesson and teaching 3:20-3:50pm How would assessment work? What do teachers need to improve on? Do we need an evaluation form? What would it look like? Should you evaluate students? (i.e. Tell them what you thought was impressive about then and what they need to work on?) Do you provide goals and suggestions to work on for next time?

Homework 1. Read “Science and Inquiry” Excerpts online. (will be posted by midnight tonight) 2. Look over “sample lesson plan on antibiotics lab”. 3. Come up with topics of discussion for next week. Note students were involved in last quarter’s lab class 10 th – 11 th grade I will include other topics 4. me if you plan on taking this
