March 4, 2014 Concrete poetry H omework: F inish concrete poem. Poetry test on Friday, March 7th! Objective: I can identify the elements of a concrete poem. Warm Up (in your composition book) Make a three column chart in your comp book. Label the columns ROOT, WORD, DEFINITION. This is for unit 5 vocabulary.

Today we will be looking at another form of poetry - the concrete poem. What is a concrete poem?

concrete poem ( also called a shape poem) poetry whose visual appearance matches the topic of the poem. The words form shapes which illustrate the poem’s subject as a picture, as well as through their literal meaning.

Examples of concrete poems

Your turn! In your groups of 4, think back to the 4 narrative poems that we have read: Each person will pick one poem, and create a concrete poem relating to this narrative. Pick an image that you think really represents something major in the narrative and create a poem based on this image. Be sure to use important wording as you create your poem.

Barbara Frietchie - brown book pg. 738 The Walrus and the Carpenter - blue book pg. 144 The Cremation of Sam McGee - you have the sheet The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere - Paul Revere and his friend made a plan. They would hang one lantern if the British were attacking by land, and two if the British were attacking by sea. - The Somerset was the name of the British ship - midnight - Medford - one o'clock - Lexington - two o'clock - Concord

Homework: Finish concrete poem. Poetry test on Friday, March 7th!
