UNIT K REVIEW Biomedical Technology

One Why do medical researchers think stem cells are important? They can be used to create perfectly matched tissue to treat a patient’s disease.

Two How do people feel about genetically modified food? Most people don’t want to buy genetically modified food because they are concerned about the possible effects.

Three What is a major fear concerning transgenic animal research? That transgenic animals threaten our environment, health and food safety.

Four What do you need to work with / create transgenic animals? Patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Five Is there evidence of successful human cloning in the world? No

Six How do scientists get a transgene into another organism? It is injected into a single cell embryo.

Seven What is pharming? Using transgenic animals to produce substances used in medicine.

Eight Give an example of an early use of biotechnology. Making cheese.

Nine How is insulin produced in a lab? Bacteria

Ten What animal is mostly used in biomedical labs? Mice

Eleven What is the biggest challenge to using xenografts? Rejection

Twelve What is the importance of Dolly the sheep? First cloned mammal

Thirteen What type of cloning is supported by most medical scientists? Therapeutic

Fourteen Embryonic stem cell research focuses on what? Treating disease.

Fifteen Stem cell research needs what type of funding? Private funding

Sixteen Where do embryonic stem cells usually come from? Fertilized egg

Seventeen Where were the first transgenic organisms created? Lab

Eighteen Xenografts usually come from what animal? Pig

Nineteen What class is going to have all the students pass their final exam? Mrs. D’s 4 th period BMT class!!

Twenty What is an established part of biomedical research? Transgenic models
