8 Why Focus on Information and Communications? Server-based data centers and telecommunications already use 3% of the nation’s electricity. Energy costs exceed the cost of data center IT equipment over its 3-5 year useful life. Data center energy use is increasing by 12% annually. Existing facilities face power and cooling constraints. Broadband is increasing telecom sector energy use. Even with the positive impact of ITP’s Technology Delivery, further advances through R&D are needed to meet national energy goals.

10 Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Workshop Facilitated industry-led workshop at Yahoo! with additional sponsorship by Emerson, SVLG, and the Telecommunications Industry Association Goal: Envision ICT future (vision) and identify approaches to dramatically improve ICT energy efficiency (roadmap) Participants: Telecom and data center operators, equipment and software developers/suppliers, researchers, industry associations Focus on –IT equipment and software –Power supply chain –Cooling Draft vision and roadmap released on May 13, 2009

11 ICT Vision & Roadmap: Review Workshop participants and other experts contributed one-page summaries of key concepts. Draft has been posted for industry review and comment. Industry and research communities are encouraged to submit updates and feedback, including corrections to range of values presented in following table.
