Ms. Ware- Earth Science- ? L.T.: I can explain the phases of the moon W.O.T.D.: Waning: less of the moons surface can be seen. Waxing: More of the moons surface can be seen DO NOW: Why do you think we have phases of the moon

Phases of the Moon

Moon phases http://www.regentsearth.com/Video/YouTube%20HTM/Phases%20of%20the%20moon.htm

Ms. Ware- Earth Science- L.T.: I can explain the phases of the moon. I can name various moon phases. W.O.T.D.: Cyclic events: a repetition of events, events that occur in a cycle. DO NOW: 1.) Why do we have phases of the moon? 2.) What are the phases of the moon? *REMINDER: ALL HW DUE TOMORROW

What causes the phases of the moon? The moon's revolution around Earth.

weathering, erosion, atmosphere Why is Earth not like this? Why so many? Craters What are these? No atmosphere weathering, erosion, atmosphere Why is Earth not like this?

27.3 days How long does one revolution of the moon take? How long does one rotation of the moon take? ESRTs p15

What phenomenon does this explain? We only ever see one side of the moon.

Why does the moon rise later each day? because as the Earth rotates, the moon revolves

What phase of the moon is this? New Gibbous New Crescent 3rd Quarter

Approximate Times of Moonrise and Moonset    moonrise    moonset new moon 06:00 AM 06:00 PM waxing crescent 09:00 AM 09:00 PM first quarter 12:00 PM 12:00 AM waxing gibbous 03:00 PM 03:00 AM full moon waning gibbous third quarter waning crescent How many hours is the moon visible each day? 12 hours

What is "waxing"? more of the moon's surface can be seen

What is "waning"? less of the moon's surface can be seen

The phases of the moon are what type of event? Cyclic

Going to the Moon

Ms. Ware- 10/27/09- Earth Science WOTD: Geo-centric: Earth centered Helio-centric: Sun centered L.T. I can tell the difference between heliocentric and geocentric solar systems Do Now: Draw or write about the life cycle of a star (use terms such as nebula, protostar, main sequence, red giant, super nova, or white dwarf)

http://aspire.cosmic-ray.org/labs/star_life/hr_interactive.html http://aspire.cosmic-ray.org/labs/star_life/hr_interactive.html H.R. interact diagram!!!

The Geocentric Theory The earth is located at the center of the universe and all the planets revolve around the earth.

Geocentric Cont (Aristotle (384-322 B.C.))….. The Geocentric theory was believed by the Catholic church especially because the church taught that God put earth as the center of the universe which made earth special and powerful. The idea of the Earth actually moving was widely felt as a foolish suggestion because, as they saw it, if the Earth was moving they would be able to feel it.

The Heliocentric Theory The Sun is the center of our solar system

Group Work: Work on the worksheet answer questions about the H. R Group Work: Work on the worksheet answer questions about the H.R. Diagram and the theories….help each other out!!

1.) YOU ARE A MAIN SEQUENCE STAR… a.) List the color, surface temperature, and luminosity of your star 2.) Name at least 1 star that is a main sequence star 3.) What does the graph tell you about star A? 4.) Plot the stars below on the graph. List what color each of those stars would be Star D (Temperature 5000, Luminosity 50), Color:___________ Star E (Temperature 15000, Luminosity 25), Color:___________ Star F (Temperature 9000, Luminosity 1), Color:___________ Star G (Temperature 17000, Luminosity 99), Color:___________ 5.) Draw the heliocentric and geocentric pictures below Prep for asessment: Extra credit- work as a group to solve these answers 1.) I run 10 miles per hour. How long would it take me to run 50 miles. 2.) 50 ml to L (1000 mL= 1 L) 3.)My car gets10 miles per gallon, if I drove 100 miles then how many galloons did I use up?

Do Now- 5-10 Review HR with interactive diagram- 5 Helio vs Geo- 10 Other solar systems have other suns….lead back to HR…answer questions 15 If time- conversions

B A C D W.O.T.D.: Ellipse- the shape the planet makes when it Ms. Ware Earth Science L.T. I can understand the relationship between the distance Between foci and the eccentricity. 10/20/09 W.O.T.D.: Ellipse- the shape the planet makes when it orbits around the sun Do now: 1.) If a planet has a mostly oval orbit, Where do you think the planet would be fastest? Why? 2.) Which letter would it be winter? B A C Sun D

Calculate the eccentricity of the ellipse below: length of major axis 8 miles 4 miles Formula: eccentricity = distance between foci length of major axis

Lets try a problem! Distance between foci: 1 Length of major axis: 8 1/8= .125 MORE CIRCULAR!!! Distance between foci: 4 Length of major axis: 6 4/6= .67….MORE ELLIPTICAL!!!

FOCI DISTANCE= 60 mm Major Axis= 90 mm D STAR A C B Questions: 1.) What is the approximate eccentricity? 2.) As the planet moves from A to C, what happen to the gravitational attraction? 3.) At which position does planet Q have the greatest velocity? B

Work On Lab- 10 minutes! Remember if finish early… ….get workbook for homework… …Quiz tomorrow …Presentations Thursday!
