REVIVAL OF RIVERS THROUGH OPTIMUM HARVESTING : REPLICABLE CONCEPT FOR ALL OUR NON PERENNIAL RIVERS PRESENTATION BY HARNATH JAGAWAT AT THE CONFERENCE ORGANIZED BY BHASKAR FOUNDATION AT BHOPAL ON JUNE 2010 ON “EFFICIENT WATER MANAGEMENT – CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS”

SOME ILLUSTRATIONS OF OPTIMUM HARVESTING STRUCTURES ON RIVERS River Kali-II, Dahod, Gujarat Checkdam at Chosala Damor Falia on Kali-II

Checkdam at Dadgarh on Kali-II

Checkdam at Padatiya on Kali-II There are 12 Check dams on river Kali-II and 20 Lift Irrigation on both sides of these Check dams, irrigating about 5000 acres from lift irrigation schemes and portable pump sets Total cost of these 12 Check dams and 20 LI schemes was around Rs. 367 lakhs (3.67 crores) Possibly a medium irrigation projects on this river would have costed times more for above achievements of irrigation or even much more for more achievements

SERIES OF CHECK DAMS ON RIVER HIREN IN DISTRICT BANSWARA Chorparnala Check dam on riverHiren

The entire village celebrated the completion of Check Dam at Borkhedi, District Banswara, Rajasthan. During the acute shortage of water in the summer of 2000, this check dam was full of water. The celebration was an indication that people owned this structure from the first day, which was going to transform their lives. Borkhedi Check dam on river Hiren

Recently completed Check dam Zumki, Banwara, Rajasthan on river Hiren – constructed under RKVY 5 Check dams already constructed on this river Hiren and 9 more are planned to be completed next 2-3 years by 2012 or 2013 With 14 check dams on this river, the entire river would be fully harvested having large number of lift irrigation schemes attached with these check dams On optimum harvesting the river will have water stored for 30 kms.

OPTIMUM HARVESTING STRUCTURES IN JHALAWAR PORTION OF RIVER KSHIPRA Check dam at village Parasali, Jhalawar, Rajasthan constructed under SGSY Special Project It stores 90 mcft water with back water covering 7 Kms. - in this river the width of check dam about 200 mts. and dam height of 5 mts.

Check dam at village Nishalkhedi, Jhalawar, Rajasthan on river Kshipra Check dam at village Karmakhedi, Jhalawar, Rajasthan on river Kshipra 5 structures in a series on river Kshipra in Jhalawar store totally 270 mcft water for about 30 kms. at a stretch

SMALL DAM ON BIG RIVER MAHI, DUNGARPUR, BANSWARA, RAJASTHAN Check Dam constructed under Tribal Development & Implemented by Sadguru Foundation - It stores water for 9 kms. All our large and medium river systems can have series of such small and cost effective check dams, ensuring equity and riparian rights to most of the villages on such systems without affecting people, property and environment Baneshwardham check dam on river Mahi in Rajasthan - It stores 350 mcft water–work completed in about net 7 months only by Sadguru Foundation

Series of small check dams on one small stream in village Rozam have contributed in recharging of adjoining wells - Resulting in successful horticulture and floriculture activities. There are totally 8 such Check dams – 4 seen here. SERIES OF STRUCTURE ON SMALL NALA GIVING WONDERFULL IMPACT Every Nala in India, particularly in Western India can be harvested like this small Nala

65 Local rivers and rivulets have been made perennial and few more are in the process of becoming perennial.
