Presentation transcript:

Septembre SLAC BeamCal W. Lohmann, DESY BeamCal: ensures hermeticity of the detector to smallest polar angles -important for searches Serves as a feedback system for Lumi- optimisation and beam diagnostics (see Bill’s talk) -supports maximum Luminosity

Septembre SLAC Current design (Example LDC, 14 mrad): LumiCal (Luminometer) BeamCal TPC ECAL HCAL -compact, approach smallest possible Moliere radius, e.g. Si/W sampling calorimeters -centered around the outgoing beampipe (detector phi symmetry broken) -readout after each BX (more space for electronics, power dissipation) QD0

Septembre SLAC Simulations to optimise the Design Efficient detection of high energy electrons is essential for search experiments Beamstrahlung TeV per BX electron from 2γ process E.g. from UC Boulder Head-on view Side view

Septembre SLAC Forward Region in the LDC Detector

Septembre SLAC Forward Region Vacuum Pump BeamCal LumiCal QD0 Graphite Space for electronics/connectors cooling Space for cables Shielding Tube

Septembre SLAC BeamCal Details Prototyping of 12 channel Integrated FE (amplifier and ADC) Made by S. Schuwalow

Septembre SLAC Tungsten Layers and Sensors

Septembre SLAC Front/Back Support Frames

Septembre SLAC Total mass: ~200 kg

Septembre SLAC BeamCal positioning inside the Shielding Tube

Septembre SLAC The Mounting Procedure for BeamCal 1 montage of an auxiliary structure 2 montage of the first half barrel 3 Turn the barrel and bring the first calorimeter half barrel in final position 5 montage of the second half barrel 4 remove the auxiliary structure To perform this procedure the upper half of the shielding tube has to be removed Installation and disassembly must be possible without opening the vacuum!

Septembre SLAC BeamCal (example LDC) - Length in z: 15 cm bare calorimeter ~10 cm graphite in front (reduction of backscattered electrons). ~10 cm space at the rare side (electronics, connectors) - Inner and outer instrumented radius: 20 – 165 mm - Full outer Radius: 200 mm - Outer radius including support: 220 mm - Total weight: ~200 kg - Upper part of the shielding tube must be removable - Crane operation necessary for montage/demontage -Details of FE ASICs not yet fixed, but there will be connectors, power and signal cables……. Summary
