Indian Road Construction

ROAD TRANSPORT SCENARIO Economic Growth : 5 - 6% Road Transport Sector Demand Grows at 10 – 12% Need for Road & Transport Infrastructure of International Standards Major Road Development Programmes - National Highway Development Project (NHDP) - Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) - State Road Development Programmes Proposed plan expenditure in 10 th plan (for roads)– Total approx. Rs. 250,000 crores

Proportion of Freight and Passenger Transport by Road and Rail YearFreight (Tonne-km) Road:Rail Passenger (Pass.-km) Road:Rail :8926: :7142: :6659: :6263: :4779: :3587: :3085:15

Indian Road Network- Current Status National Highway (NH) *58,112 State Highways (SH)1,37,119 Major District Roads (MDR)4,70,000 Village and Other Roads (ODR & VR)26,50,000 Total Road Length 33,15,231 (in kms) NHs are less than 2% of network but carry 40% of total traffic

Energy Scenario Energy consideration is vital issue for development activities 250 million tonne oil equivalent (energy consumption) % energy is consumed in transport sector alone India has only 0.4 % of oil reserve and 5.7% of coal reserve Consumption of petroleum products increasing at 8 to 9 % rate annually Road sector alone consume 71 % of total HSD ( 32 million tonne in a year) Can easily target 10 % saving trough improvement of roads and capacity augmentation

Major Ongoing Projects  Golden Quadrilateral  North-South Corridor  East – West Corridor  PMGSY  Connectivity to major ports  Additional 10,000 Km of NH Improvement  Riding Quality Improvement Programme for National Highways  Various State Highway Improvement Projects with World Bank Aid
