MERCURY By: Kris Kalathas

Mercury & the Periodic table What is mercury?, Mercury is an element that is shown on the periodic table. The periodic table includes all the elements in a specific order divided into groups. A row of the periodic table is called period and the top column is called lanthanides and the bottom column is called actinides. An element is a part of a substance or is part of something.

Element ,compounds and mixtures. Mercury is a element not a compound. A compound contains 2 or more elements chemically combined. Don’t get confused with mixtures they are the same as compounds except they are not chemically combined.

Atoms and elements. All elements or compounds or mixtures are made up of atoms. The atom of one element is similar but different that other elements. Atoms are made out of 3 sub-atomic particles- Electrons ,Protons and neutrons. Electrons are negatively charged ,protons are positively charged and neutrons have no charge. Here is a picture

Mercury Mercury has 80 protons and electrons and 121 neutrons (the number of protons and electrons are always the same). The symbol of mercury is Hg and the atomic mass is 200.59 a.m.u (a.m.u is the smallest set of cm and nano meters) The melting point for mercury is at 38.87 degrees Celsius and the boiling point is at 356.58 degrees Celsius. The color of mercury is silver and its because mercury is obtained from cinnabar ore. Mercury is the only element that is a metal liquid at normal temperature. Mercury and all of its compounds are toxic.

Uses of mercury and were the name came from The uses of mercury are thermometers ,barometers ,fluorescent ,lamps and batteries. Mercury was named after the planet mercury.
