Presentation transcript:

Billy and his dad are waiting to see the doctor. While waiting, Billy asks his dad a very important question. So why am I going to the doctors? Well, your mother and I believe that you may have a disease called diabetes. Over 26.3 million people have diabetes in America.

Billy and his dad are then taken to the doctor’s office to meet Dr. Health. Dr. Health then asks who is getting checked for diabetes. Hi, come in and sit down. My name is Dr. Health. So, who am I looking at today. Yeah, I'm kinda nervous. My son is the one getting checked for diabetes today.

After Billy's dad tells him that there is nothing to be scared about, the doctor starts asking questions to see if Billy has symptoms of diabetes. Ok, has it been harder for you to see? Yea I’m having a lot of trouble seeing. Billy has also been very tired and has been going to the bathroom a lot.

After Dr. Health tells Billy that he might have diabetes, Billy becomes very scared but also asks a question that many children ask. Diabetes is when you have really high blood sugar. You might have Type 1 Diabetes or Juvenile Diabetes. There are 2 main types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes, which happens to people under the age of 20; Type 2 diabetes, which most of the time develops in people over the age of 20, like your father. Also, Type 2 or Adult-On Set diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. Exactly what is diabetes? You know your poor diet and genetics could have a role in all of your symptoms. We're gonna have to keep an eye on what you eat and health from now on.

Dr. Health then tells Billy and his dad that he will have to give Billy insulin, which is a medication that a diabetic uses to make sure blood sugars are used by cells, and it gives the body more energy. After telling Billy and his dad about insulin,Dr. Health tells Billy to come back for a check-up in November. I would like you guys to come back for a check-up in November to see if the symptoms have worsened. That would be fine, and even better, that’s during National Diabetes Month.

Billy and his dad go back in November to see Dr. Health. Billy's symptoms have worsened, so his father tells Billy that Dr. Health is going to check Billy's blood sugar level. Is getting my blood sugar level going to hurt any? Of course not, you'll be perfectly fine.

Dr. Health walks in to meet Billy and his dad. Dr. Health then asks Billy how he is doing. Yes, that's what I've heard. Because of that, I'm going to have to test your blood sugar level to see if it's over 200. Dr. Health, my symptoms have seemed to worsen. I already told my son that it won't hurt at all.

After Dr. Health checks Billy's blood sugar level, he tells Billy the results. Well, it seems that you do have diabetes, but it does not mean that your life is over. All you have to do is change your diet and exercise more. Also, don't worry about anybody around you getting diabetes because there is no way to give another person diabetes. That's good, at least I can still hang out with my friends and they won't get diabetes like me. That’s great! Billy can still go to school and see his friends.

Dr. Health tells Billy and his father that it depends on how high the diabetic’s blood sugar levels are which determines how often one takes insulin. Since Billy's blood sugar level is well above 200, I would say that he takes insulin everyday. I'm also going to say that Billy comes back for a check-up, maybe every other month, to make sure he is doing okay. Thank you, doctor. Now, do we have to give Billy insulin shots everyday?
