Aboriginal Freedom Fighters and Resistance

Introduction For nearly 250 years Aboriginals have been fighting for their land, culture, recognition and equality. There was little to no recognition or appreciation of aboriginal traditions and culture. However, there were many Aboriginals who took a stand and resisted. The following presentation is about their stories.

Pemulwuy

Pemulwuy was the first Aboriginal guerilla freedom fighter. He attacked the British because they took away his tribes land, food and even kidnapped their children. Pemulwuy’s efforts were not great, for the entire aboriginal population.

Yagan

Yagan was a warrior from the tribe Noongar, he play a vital part in the aboriginal resistance. He lead a series of attacks on Western Australian settlers. His head was removed and sent to London. His death symbolizes the unjust and brutal treatment to Aborigines

Charlie Perkins

Charlie Perkins is one of the most recognized modern day aboriginal freedom fighters, who fought for their rights until his dying day. Perkins organised the freedom ride through NSW, as a protest against racism. Perkins also fought for Aboriginals right to vote.

Noel Pearson

Noel Pearson is an Aboriginal writer, lawyer and land rights activist. In 1993 Pearson was a representative for the traditional owners in the land claim to the Flinders Island and Cape Melville National Parks. Pearson is very passionate about Aboriginal education

Comparison Freedom fighters of the past sought after freedom through violence. Freedom fighters of today seek freedom through education and political activism

Conclusion I believe Aboriginal Freedom fighting has come a long way since fighters like Pemulwuy. Their efforts are more recognised and rewarded today. (Shaeley)
