Presentation transcript:

We will use a square area model to look at multiplying fractions. Example Let’s make the height of our unit square ½. 1 Let’s make the base ¼. Move the second square over the first. The answer is the intersection of the two shadings. Note the unit square is now broken into 8 equal pieces.

Let’s try one more model. Example Remember: Build both Overlap these Read answer

Example #1: When multiplying fractions, multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. Multiply the numerators. Multiply the denominators.

Example #2:

Example #3: You can make some problems easier by cross cancelling.

Example #4: When multiplying mixed numbers, change them to improper fractions. Cross cancel, if possible. 3 1 Multiply across.

Example #5: Change the mixed number to an improper fraction. Cross cancel. Multiply across.

Example #6: The nutrition label on a can of green beans lists a serving size of ½ cup. There are approximately 3½ servings in each can. How many cups of green beans does each can contain? Each can contains 1¾ cups of green beans.
