Bright leaves decorated the trees and the hum of lawnmowers could be heard over the traffic. “Hold up,” I said to Jonathon, walking over to the sign and looking over my should to be sure we were alone. I pulled the sign out of the ground and tore it in half just as I had seen the older boys do. Just then, I heard a garage door open. “Run!” I yelled to my brother, but he wouldn’t move. I hit him with my backpack and left him crying on the sidewalk as I ran to the woods to hide.

Turning the corner I saw a red, white and blue yard sign advertising the local elections staked into the wet grass. It was early October and the sun was still warm. Bright leaves decorated the trees and the hum of lawnmowers could be heard over the occasional traffic. “Hold up,” I said to Jonathon, as I walked over to the sign, looking over my should to be sure we were alone. Tentatively, I pulled the sign out of the ground and tore it in half just as I had seen the older boys do. Just then, I heard a garage door creak open. Moving quickly across his driveway, an old man with salt and pepper hair combed neatly across his head raised his fist in the air yelling at us to move away.

“Run. ” I yelled to my brother, but he wouldn’t move “Run!” I yelled to my brother, but he wouldn’t move. It was as though he was stuck to the sidewalk or sinking in quicksand. Swinging my backpack over my head, I hit him with it. “Run!” I yelled but again he didn’t budge. Big, fat tears rolled down his cheek and onto the bright green monster truck t-shirt he wore. I dropped my backpack and ran to the woods, the rhythm of my heart pounding in my chest felt like it was about to explode. I had abandoned my brother, and worse; I had left him to drag my backpack with the social studies book that seemed to weigh 20 pounds inside.
