Making a strong case for walking in Koprivnica-Croatia

Small town in the north-west of Croatia (North-West Croatia) Population: Known for Podravka factory, food seasoning Vegeta, women’s handball, Carlsberg beer, Belupo pharmaceuticals Higher income than most towns of similar size in the region- resulting in an alarming density of motorized traffic Pursuing the policy of sustainable development since 2001 Becoming the regional champion of cycling, winner of EMW Award in 2007

Reasons for change Walkable and cyclable city with a long active travel tradition and favourable landscape Health concerns- HEART group initiative ( keep your heart healthy!), diabetes and osteoporosis Crowded city centre Falling number of active children, alarming rate of children obesity Low profile of pedestrians

Project Active Access Consultations with citizens and experts Designing a network of attractive and user-friendly walking paths Promotion by medical professionals and citizen groups Improving pavement quality and public lighting

Public participation Walking audits with adults, children and decision-makers

Health paths- new city landmark

Walking is IN! 80 km of cycling tracks and walking paths- city regulation requires obligatory construction 4.5 km of Health paths 82% of children travelling to school actively Increase in walking groups membership ( women, couples, mixed groups – NO male individuals!) Walking to work- 10% increase

Conclusion New concept of high quality of life:a walkable city is an attractive place to live Keeping fit at no extra cost:good for health, good for your personal budget
