Bell Work Question:  What careers can a person have in the fashion industry? Write at least three.

Fashion Designer Attempt to design clothes which are functional as well as pleasing Must consider who is likely to wear the garment and situation in which it will be worn Have a wide range and combination of materials to work with Some sketch ideas on paper first, while others drape fabric on a dress form Average salary: $40,000-$70,000 per year

Fashion Merchandiser Track and analyze market trends, productions costs, and previous sales numbers to determine what manufacturers will buy next season Needs to be one of the first in the industry to spot a trend On the retail side: Needs to count store inventory and price clothes Average Salary: $32,000-$52,000 depending on experience

Fashion Photographer Requires a lot of traveling to exotic locations in various parts of the world Take pictures of models that will be used for different websites and magazines Aims to properly represent the works of fashion designers Average Salary: $50,000-$100,000 depending on work experience

Personal Stylist Assist and style well-known celebrities Very much like an image consultant Give fashion advice to clients Provide ideas for how wardrobes are to be worn and what accessories to wear with a particular outfit A lot of competition in the field Average salary: $40,000 per year

Costume Designer Fashion professionals who are tasked to develop wardrobes, footwear, accessories and other fashion apparels that will be used in theatre, film, and television Work closely with the directors, producers, as well as with the costume design team to ensure the costumes that will be generated are precisely based on what the story, drama, or script requires Costume designer professionals are primarily responsible for researching, designing, sewing, and drawing costumes that will be used in movie, theatre, and stage productions Average Salary: $500 per production

Costume Design Assignment Objective:  Design one costume or outfit based on a specific movie character.  In the next three days, while watching a movie, you will take detailed notes on one of the character’s style.  Type of Clothing (dress, shirt, skirt, coat, suit, pants, etc…)  Color (pattern vs. solid)  Accessories (hats, shoes, handbags, jewelry, scarves, gloves, etc…)  Fabric (fur, cotton, leather, wool, satin, etc…)  Details (buttons, belts, lace, etc…)
