Presentation transcript:

The S.I. system of measuring (metrics) (Text Reading pages 36-42)

S.I. Measurement The International System of Units (SI) is the standard measuring system for most scientists. SI combines prefixes and base units to define large and small quantities.

You will copy information from the textbook page 601 onto your work sheet. Fill out the top portion of the worksheet completely. When done, you will continue your notes from the video for answers to the bottom part of the worksheet

Measurements What type of measure is this?

ANSWER 1. Measurement of LENGTH (linear) includes height, and width 2. SI Unit of measure = Meter 3. English unit of measure = foot or inch

What type of measure is this? 20 lbs

ANSWER 1. Measurement of Mass (weight) 2. SI Unit of measure = gram 3. English unit of measure = ton, pound, ounce, short ton, long ton (be careful - an ounce and a fluid ounce are different) This is confusing, as mass is the amount of matter of an object, and weight is the force of gravity on an object.

What type of measurement is this?

ANSWER 1. Measurement of Volume 2. SI Unit of measure = liter 3. English unit of measure = ounce, cup, pint, quart, gallon

What type of measure is this? 8 ft 3 ft

ANSWER 1.Measurement of Area 2. SI Unit of measure = Square meter 3. English unit of measure = square inch, sq foot, acre

What type of measure is this? 70 MPH

ANSWER 1. Measurement of velocity 2. SI Unit of measure = meters per hour 3. English unit of measure = miles per hour

How do you measure loudness of sound?

ANSWER 1. Measurement of decibels which is the unit in both SI & English

How do you measure Heat?

ANSWER 1. Measurement of temperature 2. SI Unit of measure = degrees Celsius (centigrade) or Kelvin 3. English unit of measure = Fahrenheit

How do you measure Light?

ANSWER 1. Measurement of light 2. SI uses Lumens 3. English uses Foot Candles

What tools are used to measure?

Linear measure: tools-> Ruler, meter stick, tape measure

Weight Measure: tools-> Scale; balance; weight tape (livestock)

Volume Measure: tools-> tape measure, meter stick

Capacity Measure: tools->Measuring cup; graduated cylinder, pipette; measuring spoon, beaker

Area Measure: tools-> yard stick, tape measure, wheel measure, survey tools

Speed Measure: tools->Speedometer, radar, laser speed detector, photography (astronomy)

Sound Measure: tools->Decibel meter, hydrophones (whale sounds)(whale sounds)

Light Measure: tools->Photometer

Heat Measure: tools-> Thermometer, Infrared radiation meter.
