This is a diagram of where Matthew Flinders sailed to explore the world.

Matthew Flinders was born in Lincolnshire on the 16 th of March 1774 and died in Lincolnshire is a county in England. Matthew Flinders sailed with George Bass around the whole of Australia and left in It took Flinders and Bass 1 year to sail the whole of Australia. Matthew and George proved that Australia was a whole land mass. Matthew was also the first one to discover Tasmania with George Bass.

Matthew Flinders studied at his local parish school and at the Horbling Grammar School. During the late 1790s Flinders sailed to Australia and established himself as a first class navigator. Matthew Flinders was one of the most successful navigators for his age. Flinders put aside the thought of being a surgeon like his father and successfully became a member in the Royal Navy when he was only at the age of 15. He entered the Royal Navy on the 23 rd of October He sailed 18,000 kilometres around where he sailed. Matthew Flinders surveyed the Australian Coastline in his ship the ‘Investergator’.

Matthew Flinders carried out several important and daring voyages, discovering the coastal portions. Matthew’s career spanned just over twenty years. Matthew Flinders sailed with George Bass and Captain William Bligh. Matthew Flinders arrived at Port Phillip Bay on the 27 th of April He sailed the whole bay including the Geelong area. We are believing he was the first to see the sight of a huge expanse of water, but in a rush to reach Sydney before winter which he scheduled very well, he left Port Phillip Bay on the 3 rd of May. Matthew Flinders was and still is a very well-known explorer.

Matthew Flinders was a hydrograph person and a scientist. Matthew Flinders was the person that gave Australia it’s name. Matthew Flinders went to New South Wales when he was sailing and cut aborigines‘ hair. He grabbed scissors and just started cutting. Bass and Flinders wanted to leave, so he went and just left the aborigines’ on the island.

This was Matthew Flinders when he was 27. This is a map of where Flinders sailed in1803.
