How many did you see? FEATURE FILMS ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS

Visual Discrimination The ability to see the similarities and differences between objects, pictures, and visual symbols.

Vision Can the child see? Do they need a vision check up? Are they showing any of the warning signs? Can the child focus? Is attention and the ability to attend to the item a problem?

How do we “teach” it? Through the ABC activities? Specialized activities? Everyday objects ?

Cognitive Development Child must be able to match exact objects, and then verbalize which ones are the same, and then which ones are different.

Sequence of development Children must first have experience with the objects using all their senses to explore the object. Sensori motor stage of development (birth to 2 years)

Intuitive Thought Jean Piaget refers to this as: Ability of preschool children to form conclusions and plan actions based on immediate physical impressions. At the same time, mental images enable children to construct relationships between similar things.

Sorting Basic classification activity Occurs as a means to an end For example They may sort out all the shiny cars to play with, and leave the rest

Matching Placing exact objects together

Physical Attributes Children will key in on one particular attribute when they are sorting objects and may get “caught” by that one attribute in that they may not be able to take in to consideration another attribute! Often this is what happens with letter identification.

Ability to De-center As they grow and gain more experience with the world, the children are gradually more able to consider many attributes at the same time. They can focus on the details while keeping the “whole” in mind!

Visual Discrimination Activities Every day stuff that children can manipulate and explore Three dimensional objects and 2 dimensional objects Visually stimulating Not necessarily have any letters in it
