Howto use Eureka ICS 105 Research Team Fall 2000

Introduction Eureka is a program that helps you do visual data mining. It achieves this by allowing you to do these things Explore data Analyze data Search data

Key Components and Features Grouping Filtering Sorting Spotlight

Key Components and Features – Grouping In Eureka a Table Lens allows you to group records by the variables within a column. Grouping divides the Table Lens into sub-tables that sort or filter independently.

Key Components and Features – Grouping Question: Can you Group your data by certain Category of data or column Y.

Key Components and Features - Filtering The Filter command allows you to filter a subset of data and work with it in a separate window. You can filter selected cells, a group of records, or records with particular values.

Key Components and Features – Filtering Question: Find the data that fits the conditions, “X, Y and Z”.

Key Components and Features – Sorting In Eureka, sorting is an especially powerful data analysis tool for identifying patterns and relationships between variables. After sorting, you can tell at a glance if relationships exist between the sorted column and other column variables.

Key Components and Features - Sorting Question: Please sort data by column X, and by Group Y.

Key Components and Features – Spotlighting You can visually track records by spotlighting data that interests you. The cells are marked with a persistent magenta highlight that follows the data as you sort and re- sort the Table Lens.

Key Components and Features – Spotlighting Question: Can you “spotlight” the data set that you want to keep track of?

Summary We hope that this overview has helped you understand Eureka better. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any of the mentors present.

Final Comments On behalf of the ICS 105 Team, thank you for joining us. Please also remember to fill out the survey at the end of your trial.
