Looking at and Talking about Art: Environmental Concerns

I will look at and talk about artwork that focuses on environmental concerns. I will listen to and think about what other people have to say. I will create my own, original artwork that addresses an environmental concern in a unique way.

First, LOOK and THINK to yourself quietly: “What do I see?” Next, take turns asking your partner, “What do you see?” and listen respectfully to her/his perspective. Kate MacDowell

LOOK and THINK quietly to yourself: “What is this artwork about? What do I see that makes me think this way?” Next, take turns asking your partner, “What do you think the artwork is about?”

The artist depicts insects she collects at nuclear test areas and accident sights, and nuclear power plants. Her illustrations reveal physical malformations caused by low- level exposure to radiation.

The artist imagines rats of the future that are based on his research into evolution and today’s environmental hazards. These super rats with big kangaroo lets and gigantic fangs that have evolved to survive in a world devastated by human intervention and pollution.
