REFORM BILL OF 1832: PARLIAMENT EXTENDS SUFFRAGE TO THE WEALTHY BRITISH MIDDLE CLASS; MADE UP FACTORY OWNERS, BANKERS, AND MERCHANTS; ONE IN FIVE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE.

BRITAIN ADOPTS DEMOCRATIC REFORMS CHARTIST MOVEMENT: MOVEMENT FOR VOTER RIGHTS AND PARLIAMENT SANCTIONS; THE MOVEMENT WAS UNSUCCCESSFUL. DREYFUS AFFAIR STARTED B/C SOME FRENCHMEN WANTED A RETURN TO MONARCHY OR A MILITARY RULE AND B/C OF A WIDESPREAD FEELING OF ANTI-SEMITISM. IN 1894, CAPTAIN ALFRED DREYFUS,A JEWISH FRENCH OFFICER, WAS ACCUSED OF SELLING MILITARY SECRETS TO GERMANY. HE WAS ARRESTED AND FOUND GUILTY AND SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON. IN A FEW YEARS NEW EVIDENCE SHOWED THAT DREYFUS HAD BEEN FRAMED BY OTHER ARMY OFFICERS.

ZIONISM B/C OF THE ANTI-SEMITISM SHOWN IN THE DREYFUS CASE ALONG W/ OTHER PERSECUTION OF JEWS THROUGHOUT EASTERN EUROPE, JEWS ATTEMPTED TO FORM A SEPARATE HOMELAND IN PALESTINE. THIS MOVEMENT IS CALLED ZIONISM. POGROMS: ORGANIZED CAMPAIGNS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST JEWS IN RUSSIA.

FRENCH WOULD SLOWLY BECOME PART OF A DOMINANT ENGLISH CULTURE. –2. CREATE A SOCIETY THAT COULD HANDLE DOMESTIC MATTERS INTERNALLY. IN 1867 CANADA FORMS A DOMINION: SELF GOVERNING IN DOMESTIC AFFAIRS BUT A PART OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE. BY 1871 CANADA STRETCHED TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN.

AUSTRAILIA AND NEW ZEALAND OBTAIN SELF RULE JAMES COOK CLAIMED NEW ZEALAND IN 1769 AND AUSTRAILIA IN 1770 FOR GREAT BRITAIN. ORIGINAL INHABITANTS: –MAORIS: NEW ZEALAND –ABORIGINES: AUSTRALIA BRITAIN BEGAN AUSTRALIAN COLONIZATION BY USING IT AS A PENAL COLONY. PENAL COLONY: PLACE WHERE CONVICTS ARE SENT TO SERVE A PRISON TERM AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO A PRISON.
