Getting into Gear What’s what in the Science lab!

Success Criteria You will know that you understand about science equipment when you can: Name common items used in the Science lab Draw the symbols for items of Science gear Give a use for items of Science gear

Beaker Used for: collecting, mixing and heating chemicals

Conical Flask Used to: Collect filtered liquids and to hold liquids that need swirling to mix.

Test-tube A Test tube is used to mix and/or heat small amounts of solids and liquids. It holds about 10mL.

Boiling Tube A Boiling tube is used to heat small volumes of liquids to boiling. It holds about 30mL.

Filter Funnel Used to separate solids from liquids and to pour liquids.

Evaporating dish Used to evaporate a liquid by heating over a Bunsen.

Tripod Used to support beakers and other apparatus (gear) for heating.

Gauze Mat Use: Placed on tripod to support beakers, flasks etc and to spread out the heat from the Bunsen.

Tongs Use: To handle hot equipment.

Heatproof mat Use: protects bench from hot objects, is placed under the Bunsen.

Retort stand Use: holds apparatus at a suitable height (used with boss and clamp).

Boss and Clamp Use: Securely holds apparatus to the retort and clamp stand.

Bunsen Burner Use: to provide the heat needed for many experiements

Test-tube holder Use: holds test tube or boiling tube when heating it over a Bunsen flame.

Measuring Cylinder Used for Measuring the volume of a liquid

Activity Move around the room in pairs and name the pieces of gear on the side benches.
