Ultimate Speed Challenge The Ultimate Speed Challenge Lesson Plan also has three steps: –Step 1: Reading activity –Step 2: Explore an existing design and available materials –Step 3: Design an improved car To save time today, a pre-completed classroom data table is provided. Use this data and the Engineering Design process to design a faster car.

Ultimate Speed Challenge: Your Group Packet Lesson Plan Vocab Alert! Article Exploration Activity Class Data Table Building Instructions Data Table with Data Design Activity Our focus today

Ultimate Speed Challenge: Today’s Activity Read the Ultimate Speed Challenge article. Use the Design Activity handout to –Fill in the criteria, priorities, and constraints sections. –Sketch two possible design for a miniature Coaster car. –Build prototype of the designs. –Test them, filling in the first two rows of the data tables –Develop improved designs and test them (time permitting)

Ultimate Speed Challenge Discussion What science concepts are involved? What factors made your car go the fastest?

Ultimate Speed Challenge Discussion (continued) What different designs did you see and which ones were the most effective? Why? What happened when more mass was added? Did it matter where the mass was placed?

Ultimate Speed Challenge Discussion (continued) Did it matter where the axles were placed? Was it hard to get the car to travel in a straight line?

Small Group Discussion What additional thoughts do you have about Engineering Design process based on what you’ve learned from the Ultimate Speed Challenge activity? What problems do you anticipate with your students and how can you resolve these issues? What is your biggest roadblock to using the Engineering Design process?
