Snickers Relative Dating Lab

1. Cut the chocolate off of one side of your snickers bar Snickers Relative Dating Assignment 1. Cut the chocolate off of one side of your snickers bar 2. Draw and label the four main layers of your snickers bar 3. Cut a fault into your snickers and piece it back together off center Redraw 4. Tilt one half of your fault and stick snickers back together. Redraw 5. Point out inclusions 6. Weather and erode top couple layers of snickers. Leave angles! Redraw 7. Now use bit of frosting to add another layer of sediment… add to drawing and label unconformities

So sometimes the rules don’t apply… Caramel and Peanut Layer Nougat Top chocolate Bottom chocolate layer There are 3 Rules that allow scientists to date rocks Relative Dating 1. 3 Laws of Relative Dating Superposition: Layer on top Is always youngest 2. LEARNING CHECK 1 Which layer on your snickers bar is the youngest and which is the oldest 2. Cross-Cutting Principle Any fault or magma plume that cuts across a rock is always younger than the rock it cuts across 3. LEARNING CHECK 2 Is the fault you cut into the snickers older or younger than the snickers rock around it? Fault The bottom chocolate layer is now above the younger layers Because of the tilting 3. Original Horizontality All rocks are laid down flat to begin with… if they are angled or vertical they are not new. 4. LEARNING CHECK 3 Can you point out where old rock is now above young rock… does that make it younger? So sometimes the rules don’t apply… 1. Redraw 7. Now use bit of frosting to add another layer of sediment… add to drawing and label unconformities Unconformities Breaks in the rock record because eroded rock has been destroyed 5. Inclusions Old pieces of igneous rocks that have been concreted in by younger sedimentary rocks. 6. 7. Unconformities LEARNING CHECK 4 What are the inclusions in your snickers bar? In reality are they older than the stuff they are in? Inclusions Learning Check: 5 Label two different areas where your rocks have been lost forever and new rock has overlaid.

WarmUp (2-8-13) Which letter is pointing to the oldest layer? Which law of relative dating explains how we know? A – Law of Superposition C. Agenda: WarmUp How It’s Made Snickers Lab Rock Clip B. A.
