GIS + ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR (together forever…..)

EXPORT MAP TO ILLUSTRATOR In ArcMap: File > Export Map > Save as type ‘AI’

OPEN MAP IN ILLUSTRATOR OPEN LAYERS Open the AI file in Adobe Illustrator. If the layer’s window is not already opened, go to the ‘Windows’ pull down menu and select LAYERS. Shortcut: F7 Layers Menu

ILLUSTRATOR LAYERS Your layers in ArcMap are kept in the AI file. Eye symbol: makes layers visible/not visible. (The same as the check mark in GIS. Lock symbol: keeps layers visible but will not allow you to select or change items in the layer Layers in AI work the same way as they do in GIS.

MANIPULATING ELEMENTS Your line, shape, and point files are translated into individual elements in AI. This allows you to manipulate each line/point/shape individually. MANIPULATING ELEMENTS Color menu similar to GIS (under the Windows) COLOR OF FILL COLOR OF OUTLINE **The one on top is what you are changing the colors on.

MANIPULATING ELEMENTS Any new information you want to add to your map should be done on a separate layer(s). Why would I need to know this?!?! Bringing files into AI will allow you to quickly change elements and draw new elements. You could… Propose a new road Propose trees along an existing road Change the boundaries of a park MANIPULATING ELEMENTS Black arrow: selects the entire object. Good for scaling, rotating and moving objects. White arrow: allows you to manipulate individual points. Good for changing the shape of an object or changing the direction of a line. Pen tool: Allows you to draw new shapes (hold shift to draw straignt 90 lines.) Add Text Draw a line Add a square/ rectangle shape

Any new information you want to add to your map should be done on a separate layer(s). Want another shape to look the same as another? This is the tool for you!! The eye dropper tool allows you to match one element’s properties to another. MATCHING PROPERTIES First: Select the object you want to change. You will know it is selected because it is outlined and the individual points are highlighted. Then select the eye dropper tool from the tool bar. Finally, click the object you want to match your selected object to!

Any new information you want to add to your map should be done on a separate layer(s). Tired of clicking on each individual object so you can change multiple objects at once? This tool allows you to quickly select all objects with similar attributes! SELECTING ELEMENTS
