Metrics and Measurement kilohecto deca BASE UNITdecicentimilli (K) (h) (da) meter (m) (d) (cm) (mm) gram (g) liter (L) 1 *Hint: 1 m = 100 cm = 1000 mm and 1km = 1000m 1 g = 1000 mg and 1kg = 1000 g 1 L = 1000 mL and 1ml = 1 cc Example Problems: 1mm = ? Km1kg = ? mg 1.mm1. kg 1mm = Km1kg = mg

The International System Of Units (The S.I.System or Metric System) 1.Length – The distance between Two(2) points. The base metric unit of measure for length is the meter (m). For longer distances use the kilometer (km). For shorter distances the centimeter (cm) or millimeter (mm) will be used. A metric ruler (meter stick) is used to measure length. 2.Volume – The amount of space a gas, liquid or solid takes up. The base metric unit of measure for volume is the liter (L). For smaller volumes use the milliliter (mL) or the cubic centimeter (cc). A graduated cylinder is used to measure liquid volumes. * Note: 1 mL = 1 cc *

The International System Of Units (The S.I.System or Metric System) 3.Volume of a Rectangular Solid (R.S.) – Vol. of a R.S. = length (l) x width (w) x height (h) w = 10 cm h = 10 cm l= 10 cm Vol. of R.S. = 10cm x 10cm x10cm Vol. Of R.S. = 1000 cm 3

The International System Of Units (The S.I.System or Metric System) 4.Mass – The amount of matter in an object. The base metric unit of measure for mass is the kilogram (kg). For smaller masses the gram (g) or milligram (mg) will be used. A balanced scale called a triple beam balance can be used to measure mass.

The International System Of Units (The S.I.System or Metric System) 5.Temperature – The amount of molecular movement (kinetic energy) in a substance. The metric unit of measure for temperature is the Celsius scale( 0 C). Thermometer Water (H 2 O) freezes at 0 0 C. Water (H 2 O) boils at C.

Metrics and Measurement 6. Mass and Weight – A person’s weight is the result of gravity pulling on the person’s mass. Weight can change. Mass does not change. 7. Density – Density is the mass of an object divided by the object’s volume. Density = _____mass (g)___ volume (cm 3, ml)
