NATIVE AMERICANS The american indians, the original inhabitants of the American continent, are probably arrived from Siberia across the Bering Strait to Alaska and then moved east and south. America's Indians have reason to be angry about one thing: modern America was built on land stolen from their ancestors. the U.S. government made hundreds of treaties with the various tribes about land, but the whites broke most of them.
AMERICAN INDIANS NOWADAYS Today, there are about 3 million American Indians in North America and the largest tribes include Cherokee, Sioux, Navajo, Apache, Blackfeet and Pueblo. Some prefer to live in reservations. There are about 175 reservations, most of which lie west of the Mississippi River. Alcoholism is a problem for 25% of the adult males. 75% of "Native Americans" suffer from malnutrition. Now young people are educated about their language, their culture and their way of life and Indians have the opportunity to regain their cultural identity and claim their right to be a "people".
