CAREER RESEARCH: THE O*NET SYSTEM

What is the O*NET System It is a system that provides information such as: The education or schooling required to obtain specific jobs The skills and abilities needed to adequately do specific jobs The salaries of different jobs The type of people that typically do certain jobs

How does this type of information help students? By researching different jobs, you are able to make decisions about the classes that you take that will better prepare you for the career path that you follow. By knowing about different jobs you can begin to take the steps that you need to take in order to enter the field in which you are interested. Begin to improve certain skills that are required by jobs that interest you.

How does *ONET work? 1. Go to the website : 2. In the upper right hand corner type the name of an occupation that you want to learn about. For instance, if you type in “Welder” a list of jobs will come up. Click on the one you would like to research. Then, all of the information about that occupation will come up. 3. You can them click on the different items that interest you such as tasks, tools & technology, knowledge, skills, abilities, work activities, work context, job zone, education, etc

What other jobs would you like to know about? Note that although there are many jobs in this database, not every job is represented by the website You can also search occupations through the “Advanced Search”. This option allows you to browse occupations by entering in information to learn the type of job that matches that information For instance, choose skills from the drop down menu and then click on basic skills. Next, select mathematics. Occupations that require math skills will then be displayed.

Try this on your own time! There are many more options that this website offers that we do not have the time to research today. Write down the web address: and research jobs on your own.
