Word Processing and DTP Letts Chapter 10

Introduction Word processing means using IT to produce text. The main advantages of word pressing are: it is easy to correct mistakes; clear professional-looking results; spellings can be checked automatically; automatic word wrap.

Common Features The following are common features of word processing: underlining text; italics; making text bold; centring a line; double line spacing.

Other terms and features n A font is a set of printed characters of a particular size, style and design. Word processors usually offer a choice of font and size. n A spell checker is a program which checks the spelling of a word you have used against those in a dictionary. n The TAB key causes the cursor to jump several positions. The standard TAB position can be reset.

Other terms and features n Margins can be changed so text is further away from or nearer the edge. There are left, right, top and bottom margins. n The indent is the distance text is moved in from the margins. n To justify (alignment) means to keep the letters in a straight line at the edge of the page. n A block of text can be selected then deleted, copied or moved.

Other terms and features A word or words can be: n Searched (find) for or n Searched for and replaced throughout the text. n A mail merge produces a set of personalised letters by merging personal details with a standard letter. n A personalised letter is a standard letter made to look like a personal letter by adding a name address and other personal details to it.

Desktop Publishing - DTP Desk top publishing (DTP) produces page layouts of high enough quality for printing or publication. DTP facilities include: n producing text and graphics; n importing text and graphics; n dividing the page in to columns; n moving pictures and text and adjusting their size; n guides to position text and graphics accurately.
