EARLY LIFE OF JUGARO KANO Ju-Do was created by じごろ かの Born in 1860, he was born into a affluent family. Married かの さだこ and then changed his last name to Kano. From the age of 7 he studied English, Japanese Calligraphy ( しょど ) four Confucian texts. When he was 14 he started at an English boarding school called いくえいーぎじゅく The bullying culture was the catalyst for him to seek out a Jujitsu Dojo at which to train in.

THE KODOKAN こどかん In February 1882, Kano founded a dojo and school at the Eishi-ji Buddhist Temple. He attended the dojo three times a week to help teach It was relatively small, only a 12 mat training area

TECHNIQUE The objective is to either takedown or throw your opponent to the ground. KENDO けんど HISTORY Kendo was created by the earliest samurai during the かまくら period Kendo was influenced heavily by Zen Buddhism Back then, kendo, horse riding as well as archery were the main pursuits of the military class Kendo means “way of the sword” Kendo is a modern martial art of sword fighting based on traditional swordsmanship[

MODERN PRACTICE Kendo is more noisy than most of the other martial arts, the reason is because the competitors use a shout or きあい The practitioners train barefoot and also fight barefoot

SUMO すも Sumo is a competitive full contact sport where a wrestler attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring You cannot touch any part of your body to the ground besides your feet You can still have one foot in and one foot out of the ring and you will still be in the match (not for long though)

BOUT PREPARATION A top division wrestler will arrive at the wring during the afternoon They have East and West room so the fighters don’t meet in the same room The wrestler will change into his Kesho-mawashi, an ornate, embroidered silk apron which he will wear during the ring entering ceremony During the ceremony they will be introduced to the crowed one by one Right before the fight they will squat to each other in the ring, clap their hands then spread them wide This is to show that they have no weapons

KARATE からて Karate literally means open handed It a striking art using punching, kicking, knee, elbow strikes and open-handed techniques A practitioner is called a からてか

ORIGIN Began as a common fighting system known as te. in 1372 some forms of Chinese martial arts were introduced to the Ryukyu islands by visitors from China In 1392 a large Chinese family group moved to Okinawa for the purpose of cultural exchange There they shared their knowledge of Chinese arts and sciences, these included martial arts
